SUMMARY: The librarian in this position will advance the mission of the university in education and community service by maintaining support for the library’s outreach and community engagement services. PC Magazine recognized several universities, including the University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA), for their collaboration in the OpenStax project. STEM Librarian (Scholarly Resources Librarian)
The University of Texas at San Antonio Libraries seeks an energetic, customer-focused STEM Librarian to provide library, research, and education services to faculty, staff and students to enrich the academic curriculum and support the research enterprise. The librarian will also provide reference assistance online and in person, including some night and weekend hours.

Qualifications & Experience
Required:

  • MLS or equivalent from an ALA accredited program. Degree must be completed prior to start date.  
  • Knowledge of print and online resources in the biological sciences, physical sciences or engineering.
  • Knowledge of new technologies and software associated with service delivery in libraries and academic institutions.
  • Knowledge of specialized software and/or datasets relevant to the biological sciences, physical sciences or engineering.
  • Outstanding oral and written communication skills
  • Good interpersonal skills
  • Use of standard office equipment including library and business PC applications.

Preferred:

  • Six months experience using and teaching information resources in the biological sciences, physical sciences or engineering.
  • Degree or coursework in the biological sciences, physical sciences or engineering.
  • An understanding and knowledge of current and emerging trends in science and engineering
  • Knowledge of scholarly communication, open access initiatives or open educational resources
  • Experience with bibliographic management software
  • Experience using statistical software/tools related to research including but not limited to SPSS, SAS, and R.

Salary:  Commensurate with experience and qualifications. This is a full‐time A&P, benefits‐eligible position.

UTSADean Hendrix, associate university librarian for research, education and outreach for the University at Buffalo Libraries, has been named dean of the UTSA Libraries. He will assume his new position on May 1, 2016.

Identified as one of the top 20 librarian contributors to library and information science literature worldwide, Hendrix’s research focuses on bibliometrics, research impact, data management, strategic planning, social networks, and e-textbooks.

His work in librarianship earned him the SUNY Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Librarianship in 2012. In his current position at the University at Buffalo, Hendrix oversees all reference and education services in six library locations. Over the course of his 12-year career at UB, he has led various areas including communications, assessment, and library systems.

We are pleased to announce the appointment of Owen Ellard as Senior Director of Libraries at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio effective February 1, 2016.

Mr. Ellard has most recently served as the Chief Operating Officer of the Texas Medical Center Library in Houston. Prior to his appointment at the TMC Library, he held directorships at the Health Sciences Library and Informatics Center at The University of New Mexico, Skeen Library at New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology, and Mount Holyoke College in South Hadley, MA. He has previously worked in San Antonio at the Sueltenfuss Library of Our Lady of the Lake University. Mr. Ellard brings to the Health Science Center at San Antonio tremendous depth of experience in librarianship, including expertise at the interface of libraries and information technology. He holds degrees from the University of Manchester, the University of South Florida, and Pennsylvania State University, and he has been a participant in the Harvard Graduate School of Education’s leadership development program and the Association of American Medical Colleges’ Group on Information Resources (GIR) Leadership Institute.

He takes over this role from Rajia Tobia who retired in January 2016. Please join us in congratulating Mr. Ellard on his appointment. Below is his contact information.
